Overton Medical Media specializes in long format media production specifically tailored to the needs of medical professionals. OMM offers a wide range of services including: patient education documentaries, medical staff training videos, physician and practitioner recruiting videos, health communication consulting, patient advocacy and outreach programs, health care commercials, and public service announcements. OMM's productions are well researched and subject to extensive focus group analysis before distribution; smarter media means better results.
Barbara Cook Overton, head of OMM, began producing patient education programming while a Professor of Film and Television at the University of Memphis. Partnering with researchers from the University of Tennessee, she produced, directed, and edited Ask for Ace, about the importance of ACE inhibitors for congestive heart failure patients. The NIH funded project was headed by Ronald Shorr, MD, who continues his collaboration with Overton as an OMM medical consultant.
Overton, in addition to health communication research and patient education endeavors, has also worked extensively with non-profit organizations documenting third world health environments and has been active in patient advocacy and fund-raising programs. Her most notable works have been produced in collaboration with Mid-South Africa Link and its post-war recovery efforts in Sierra Leone and Liberia.
While in Humboldt County, Overton has worked closely with the Community Health Alliance producing several projects in conjunction with the Aligning Forces for Quality initiative supported in part by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She's also been active in promoting patient services and educational programs at Mad River Community Hospital. She and her husband, Clayton Overton, MD (also an OMM medical consultant), are committed to health care and health communication in Humboldt County!
