Barbara Cook Overton

Barbara Cook Overton, MFA is the chief creative force driving BCO Media Productions and Overton Medical Media. She graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Mass Communications from the University of Charleston and earned a Master of Fine Arts in Film and Television Studies from the University of New Orleans. Overton's resume includes The People's Court, Real Sex for HBO, many award-winning narrative and documentary productions, training and corporate videos, music videos, television and web commercials, a brief stint as a news reporter, and post-production credits for ESPN and the Travel Channel. Perhaps of greater distinction are the six years she spent as a Professor of Film and Television at the University of Memphis. Her principle area of academic research dealt with health communication and documenting third world medical environments. While in Memphis, she also worked as an Avid editor for Running Pony Productions. Having relocated to Humboldt County in 2007, Overton partnered with Morse Media on the production of training videos for Sun Valley Floral Farms and shortly thereafter, founded her own company. She is also an instructor for Humboldt State University and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Overton is a skilled videographer and editor, as well as an award-winning producer and director. In her many years of film and television work, she's been a grip, a gaffer, a production coordinator, a script supervisor, an assistant director, a location scout, an associate producer, and a production assistant. She's also an actress, having appeared in several films, commercials, and theatre productions!

When she isn't hard at work on a production project or grading term papers, she's active in Arcata Rotary, chairing the World Service Committee and she's a member of the Arcata Main Street Board of Directors. Overton is also a published food and wine reviewer! For a detailed list of her production credits, please contact us.

Clayton J. Overton

Clayton J. Overton, III, MD, MPH, MSPH, FAAEM, FACEP, a Board Certified physician in Emergency Medicine, is a medical consultant with Overton Medical Media because his wife is the founder of the company and it does bear his name after all. His wife wishes to note that his indentured servitude is much appreciated. Overton is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and Louisiana State University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He's lent his medical expertise to health care missions and documentary productions in Nicaragua, Sierra Leone, Bhutan, Proyecto Alternativas in Honduras, and the International Diarrheal Disease Research Clinic in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Before attending medical school, Overton was a deck hand on a brigantine ship in the Caribbean and aboard a ketch in Australia and Asia. He was also an EMT and a Biostatistics Tutor.

Overton isn't new to film and television: he's been featured in several episodes of the TLC series Trauma, Life in the E.R. His brother, like his wife Barbara, is also a filmmaker and professor, and forcibly cast Clayton in several film school productions. His role as "bar patron" and "extra" are among his best performances, not withstanding his turn as "doctor" in a Smoothie King commercial (Overton says, "my brother cast me because I was just getting off from work and was already dressed for the part").

Overton is a member of the Board of Directors for the Humboldt-Del Norte County Medical Society and a partner with North Coast Emergency Physicians. When he isn't in the Emergency Room, which isn't often, he enjoys fine food, good wine, and traveling. He's also a consultant for his wife's various food and wine reviewing gigs, which unlike the production jobs he forced to be a part of, don't require heavy lifting!

Ronald I. Shorr

Ronald I. Shorr, MD, MS is a medical consultant with Overton Medical Media, because unlike the indentured servitude of Clayton Overton, Shorr chooses to continue a productive relationship established with Prof. Overton while both were in Memphis researching patient education strategies and medication compliance. Their combined efforts resulted in the successful educational video: Ask for ACE, about the importance of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors for congestive heart failure patients. Shorr lends his expertise to many of Overton Medical Media's projects from Florida, where he directs the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center and serves as a Professor in the Department of Aging and Geriatrics at the University of Florida.

Shorr received his B.A. in Chemistry magna cum laude from Duke University, his medical degree from Ohio State University, and has a Masters of Science in Epidemiology from Case Western Reserve University. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and fellowships in Geriatric Medicine and Pharmacoepidemiology. Shorr's been a member of the medical faculty at Case Western Reserve University, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Tennessee, before his move to the University of Florida.

Having been a principal investigator or co-investigator for NIH funded research projects, published more than 75 papers and a book, it's a wonder Shorr has time for medical consulting! Nonetheless, he manages that and a whole lot more! Dr. Shorr also is an accomplished jazz guitarist and has performed at BB King's and Isaac Hayes' in Memphis.
